Statement from Mayor Lombardi, RI League, on Judge Lanphear decision regarding Lifetime Contracts
Friday, March 25, 2022
Statement by Mayor Charles Lombardi, President, Rhode Island League of Cities and
Towns: “Earlier today, we received notice that Judge Lanphear ruled in favor of Rhode Island
communities in denying the Defendant’s motion to dismiss on Count I, violation of the
Contracts Clause, in the on-going lawsuit. Nineteen communities continue to oppose this
legislation as we know we should have the ability to negotiate and contract with our public
employees in good faith on behalf of our taxpayers and union members. The lifetime
contracts law forcefully extends terms indefinitely putting taxpayers at risk of being
forever locked into contractual provisions they can no longer afford. We are eager to move
forward to discovery and will be working with our attorney to consider our options on
Count II regarding violations of the Home Rule provision.”
