The Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns works collaboratively with the General Assembly, the Governor, and state agencies to advance policies that strengthen Rhode Island's municipalities. We actively advocate on legislation affecting local government and monitor key legislative actions to ensure the interests of cities and towns are represented. As municipalities continue to face evolving responsibilities, the League encourages policies that prove local leaders with flexibility, resources, and tools needed to meet community needs while maintaining fiscal sustainability and minimizing pressure on property taxpayers.

  • WE SUPPORT LEGISLATION that strengthens local decision-making, fosters municipal innovation, and ensures adequate state aid for schools and communities.
  • WE OPPOSE LEGISLATION that undermines local authority or creates unfunded mandates for cities and towns, especially those impacting public employees.

With Rhode Island consistently ranking among the states with the highest property tax burdens in the nation, reducing pressure on local property taxpayers remains a shared priority. The League urges the General Assembly and the Governor to partner with municipalities to identify and eliminate costly state unfunded mandates, provide communities with greater operational flexibility, and pursue policies that help control local costs without diminishing essential public services.

The League has complied key votes by legislators on issues impacting cities and towns, which are highlighted in our annual scorecard.
