Municipal Leaders Lab
An advanced program for MLA alumni
The Municipal Leaders Lab is an exclusive leadership development program designed for graduates of the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns' Municipal Leadership Academy (MLA). Building on the foundation established through MLA, the Lab provides a highly interactive learning environment focused on applied leadership, innovation, and problem-solving.
Participants will engage in case studies, team projects, facilitated discussions, and experiential learning activities. Selected participants will join a small cohort representing diverse municipalities, professional disciplines, and perspectives. Through expert guest speakers, multimedia learning, peer collaboration, and real-world challenges, participants will expand their leadership capacity and strengthen their problem-solving toolkit.
How is the Leaders Lab different from the MLA?
The Leaders Lab is intentionally designed as a smaller, more intensive cohort experience. Unlike the traditional MLA format, the Lab emphasizes hands-on learning, peer-to-peer engagement, and collaborative problem-solving.
Participants will learn as much from one another as they do from outside experts. The experience will be shaped by the interests, experiences, and challenges brought forward by cohort members, creating a dynamic and participant-driven learning environment.
What is the time commitment?
Lab members will meet one full workday per month from September through June.
Fall 2026 Meeting Dates (Tuesdays):
- September 22
- October 27
- November 17
- December 15
Spring 2027 dates will be announced at a later time.
How large will the cohort be?
To encourage meaningful discussion, collaboration, and relationship-building, the Leaders Lab cohort will be smaller than a typical MLA class.
